Yu-Ying Tang, PhD, Assistant professor, School of Nursing, School of Nursing, National Defense Medical Center, Taipei, Taiwan, Taiwan

The purpose of this study was to examine caregiver characteristics and the degree to which these variables impact caregivers. This study was a correlation design using purposive sampling. A sample representing 285 primary caregivers of chronically ill persons was obtained from Taipei Long Term Care Demonstration Center. A structure questionnaire was used to interview caregivers. The results were:(1) the level of impact of careigvers for chronically ill persons was shown below the averages scores (13.62) which indicated more negative caregiving impact; (2)caregiving impact was positively correlated with living arrangements, lingth of caregiving time, and the care recipient's active ability respectively; (3)caregiving impact was negatively correlated with the health status of caregivers, health expenditure, care recipient's age, and self-care ability respectively. The findings of this study could be used as a reference or a guideline for long term care health professionals to better understnad the impact of caregivers for chronically ill persons in community care.
