Learning Objective #2: Explain the patterns of problem resolution experienced by caregivers of children with HIV/AIDS |
Problem: Caregivers of children with HIV/AIDS experience numerous problems that threaten the integrity of the family system. Inorder to maintain the integrity of the family system effective problem solving is essential. Description: A secondary qualitative analysis was conducted on data generated from a large scale intervention study that focused on using social support to facilitate problem solving aimed at mitigating stress and facilitating coping. The Lazarus Stress Coping Model was used as the study framework. These data were obtained from the monthly flow sheets of 120 subjects that were completed by caregivers and investigators as part of the study intervention.Within these data are documented the process of problem identification-solution-resolution-objective and subjective outcomes. Data Analysis:Data were analyzed using a qualitative analysis software program and expert validation to achive content analysis which was used to determine themes of caregiver problems and themes of caregiver solutions. Results:Problems experienced by these caregivers were numerous with many similiar patterns identified among caregivers. Solutions to these clusters of problems were problem specific and focused on the effective usse of problem solving strategies. Effective problem solutions are achieved for those caregivers who arre able to develop problem solving strategies aimed at problem resolution. HIV/AIDS is one among many complex problems that these caregivers must cope with each and every day of their lives.
