Learning Objective #1: Discuss the partnership between the nursing program at the University of Texas at El Paso and the Cancer and Chronic Disease Consortium of El Paso | |||
Learning Objective #2: Identify the advantages of a community partnership program to students and to the community partner |
Background : This is a description of a collaborative project started in January 2002 between a required pre-nursing course (Wellness Perspectives Across the Lifespan) at University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and the Cancer and Chronic Disease Consortium of El Paso. The partnership was set up through UTEP’s Institute for Community-Based Teaching and Learning. Basis of the Project: The Cancer and Chronic Disease Consortium of El Paso is carrying out a project funded by the Texas Cancer Council known as the Colorectal Cancer Model. Two of the program objectives included training community participants in cancer prevention, and delivering the message about screening for colorectal cancer. Interventions: Students in the pre-nursing course (currently 85 are enrolled) are trained by personnel from the Cancer and Chronic Disease Consortium about colorectal cancer prevention, and about the current screening guidelines. Students then are scheduled to attend local health fairs to carry out screening, or they screen five family members or friends. Evaluation: In spite of numerous scheduling challenges, the partnership has been beneficial to both students and the Cancer and Chronic Disease Consortium. Students carry out health promotion activities, as well as develop a beginning awareness of community resources available. Because of the number of students involved, the Cancer and Chronic Disease Consortium is able to screen a greater number of clients in a shorter time period than previously.
