Tiina T. H. Nurmela, N/A, PhD., Principal Lecturer and Ulla M. Tuomaala, N/A, Principal Lecturer. Health Care Education, Turku Polytechnic, Turku, Finland

Objective: was to develop nursing of patients in pain and to develop nursing education about nursing of patients in pain

Desing: This enquiry is a three-phase action research project. The phases were: theoretical phase, implementation and evaluation.

Population, sample, setting, years: The sample was taken from Finnish, Danish and Norwegian nursing students and teachers. 31 students and 6 teachers from selected schools participated in the pilot. Second years nursing ecucation formed the setting during the year 2002.

Concepts studied together: Patients in pain, culture, nursing, teaching and international co-operation

Methods: Action research and content analysis were used in different phases of the project.

Findings: The student's way to understand pain as a problem in human being's life and the nurses role in taking care of the patient seem to vary in different countries. The created teaching module, which consisted of three parts (WEB-course,nationally implemented part and intensive course together)seemed to be very effective.

Conclusions: The new way to teach nursing of patients in pain is effective and worth taking in use more widely.

Implications: The action research project managed to create new teaching culture to nursing education. The pilot showed that international co-operation in teaching nursing promotes understanding other cultures. This desing of teaching is applicable to other international settings as well.
