Nursing Students Involved in Service Learning in Guyana
In recent years short study abroad programs have increased as students seek an international experience but do not have room in their curricula for a full semester study abroad.
Two groups of students have participated in a two week Guyana Immersion Experience. Before departure they participate in a one credit course to orient them to the country, the legacy of colonialism in the southern hemisphere, and current American policies that effect health and health care. While in Guyana the students provide health education in public clinics, attend class and in clinical with Guyanese nursing students, and participate in data collection on health needs and intervention programs.
This presentation will describe the positive outcomes of this service learning experience. The outcomes include, an increase in the students' awareness of the health needs of people in developing countries, the change in students' views of America's role in the international community, students' perceptions of how this experience contributed to their personal and professional growth, and the contrbutions students made to the local community.
