Learning Objective #1: identify commmon triggers for children in North Philadelphia | |||
Learning Objective #2: evaluate the impact of an educational intervention in the home on emergency room visits and over night hospital stays for children with asthma |
Objective: to test an intervention to increase care-giver knowledge related to children with asthma during a home visit
Design: Pre-test, intervention, post-test
Population: caregivers of pediatic primary care clients with asthma in nurse-managed centers serving vulnerable populations
Concepts studied: knowledge, triggers, ER visits, hospital stays
Methods: standardized curriculum and data collection by outreach workers during home visits
Findings: Statistically significant (95% confidence) improvement in knowledge; common triggers in home vs. bedroom in North Philadelphia; % decreases in emergency room visits and hospital stays in past 2, 6 and 12 months from point of pre- and post-intervention data collection.
Conclusions: Home visits by outreach workers to caregivers of pediatric primary care clients with asthma, using standardized curriculum and data collection, can increase knowledge and lower emergency room visits and hospital stays.
Implications: Current n=198 Intervals betwee pre- and post-intervention data collection were not well controlled in this sample. Need to increase sample size to allow testing the impact of different intervals between pre- and post-intervention data collection on findings.
