Background: Universities and colleges must provide nursing students with sufficient opportunities to learn and practice fetal heart rate (FHR) auscultation skill to meet entry-level competencies established by nursing licensing organizations. Adequate practice opportunities are frequently unavailable to students. Purpose: The purpose of this applied research study was the development, implementation, and evaluation plan for a web-based tutorial program to supplement nursing student practice of FHR auscultation skill with childbearing women. Research Questions: Five research questions guided the study and included (a) what are skill requirements? (b) What are appropriate learning objectives? (c) What is appropriate content to support objectives? (d) What is an appropriate web-based tutorial development and implementation strategy? (f) What are appropriate strategies for an evaluation plan? Methodologies: The development methodology was used to develop the research study and the evaluation methodology determined the effectiveness of the tutorial program. Findings: The findings included: (a) education that plans to use new technology requires a flexible structure to allow original methods to emerge, (b) curriculum goal and three main objectives were viewed as important for nursing education, (c) curriculum recommended by SOGC (1995) was appropriate, (d) web-based program was effective in part but requires revision and technological adjustments, (e) a two tailed paired t test demonstrated significant results at a .05 level of significance, the level of probability generated was p = 1.000, (f) evaluation strategies showed positive learner reaction, increase in student learning, and overall program effectiveness. Conclusions: It was concluded that a web-based program, to augment practice, could be effective for nursing students learning fetal heart rate auscultation. Student learning was enhanced. Web-based programs can facilitate student learning of clinical nursing skills. Implications: Recommendations were suggested for using technology for the successful development and implementation of web-based programs to enhance learning.
