Objective:Describe the implementation of the use of technology in nurse practitioner education; This educational intervention was designed and developed to implement a complete web-based MSN degree program which includes core curriculum, support courses, and clinical courses for nurse practitioners. Design:Case Study Method where in history and previous patterns of Nurse Practitioner Education was explored. Components important to the phenomenon of distance education were examined. Population, sample setting, years: Private, non-sectarian University, in a major metropolitan city in the USA; Years: 2000-2003; Concept/Intervention studied:Methodological soundness was based on theory and review of the literature surrounding educational delivery/methods. Bean and Metzner model (1985) predicted that nontraditional students who are older, part-time or commuter students will be greatly influenced by environmental variables in selecting educational opportunities. Innovative means for education are looking toward technolgocal support and delivery methods. Carty and Rosenfield (1998) indicate that collaboration in the development and implementation of technological education facilities and organization of courses will provide an infrastructure for successful technological instruction. Methods: This case study was organized into a coherent whole over the course of three years at a metropolitan University; An in depth study and analysis of the implmentation and development of distance education delivery in nurse practitioner education allowed qualitative and quantitative data to be collected on learning outcomes. Findings:Computer based instruction provided consistent presentation to multiple learners, within cost effective time frames and in a cost effective manner with similar learning outcomes when compared to traditional educational delivery methods. Conclusions: Implementation of Distance education in NP programs can be achieved with collaborative development design, and in cost effective manner with similar learning outcomes. Implications:Qualitative data themes demonstrate high student satisfaction and excellent academic outcomes. Distance education is a growing trend that is sweeping across the educational systems.
