Factors That Increase or Decrease Academic Success Among Minority Nursing Students

Objectives: 1) Identify factors that increase or decrease academic success among culturally diverse baccalaureate nursing students. 2) Identify factors that are significantly different for specific minority groups (Blacks, Asians, Hispanics and American Indians). Design: Descriptive Survey Population, Sample, Setting and Years: The population surveyed was baccalaureate nursing students in California. The sample included 770 students from diverse cultural backgrounds. The study took place over a three year period and has been completed in 2003. Variables Studied: The variables studied included demographic variable, individual/background variables, environmental variables, social integration variables, and academic integration variables. Methods: A 99-item questionnaire was developed by the investigator. It was tested for reliability (test-retest reliability .83 Pearson’s r) and for face validity by a panel of 10 doctorally prepared nursing educators. A stratified random sampling method was used to select the 770 participants included in the study. Statistical analysis methods included descriptive analysis, correlations, ANOVA, multiple regression, item analysis and discriminant analysis. Findings were discussed, conclusions drawn and recommendations for practice, educational policy and future research were identified. Findings: Ten factors and four major categories were identified by the participants as being most important in increasing their academic success in nursing. Ten factors and four major categories of barriers to academic success in nursing were also identified. Similarities and differences among cultural groups were analyzed. Specific characteristics and factors significantly related to increasing or decreasing the success the academic success for students from each cultural group were identified and will be discussed. Conclusions: There were more similarities than differences among cultural groups in regard to factors identified as either increasing of decreasing academic success. However, the significant differences characterizing each group have important implications for increasing the academic success for students from Asian, Black, Hispanic and American Indian backgrounds.
