The Effects of Music Therapy on Stress, Anxiety, Depression, and Immune Function in Hemodialysis Patients

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of music therapy on stress, anxiety, depression, immune function, and vital signs in the hemodialysis patients. This study used a quasi- experimental design with a nonequivalent control group, pre-and post-test. The sample included 47 patients(23 in the control group and 24 in the experimental group) who receiving hemodialysis in medical center and university hospital in Jeonju, Korea. The data were collected from May 7, 2003 to July 2, 2003. The experimental group received the music therapy for 4weeks(3 hours per each session, 3 times a week).

The results were follows: 1. Music therapy decreased stress, anxiety, and depression score significantly in the experimental group as compared with the control group. 2. Music therapy increased the number of B lymphocyte in the experimental group as compared with the control group. 3. Music therapy decreased diastolic pressure significantly in the experimental group as compared with the control group.
