The Growth of Professional Nursing for Saudi Arabia: Needs and Results

Objective: To explain the status of the nursing profession in Saudi Arabia and to describe the strategies adopted to foster nursing development in the country.

Design: A descriptive study reflecting the quality and quantity of Saudi nurses and their level of education.

Population, Sample, Setting, Years: The Population is the total number of nurses in Saudi Arabia; a sample of 20% of Saudi nurses at all health care organizations from 1995 to 2003 was utilized.

Variables: All the social, academic and economic factors will be discussed in relation to their impact on nursing development.

Methods: Review of the literature and interviews with key personnel.

Findings: An increased awareness about the nursing profession at public and policy-making levels. This became evident starting in 2000, with many positive changes occurring in Saudi Arabia leading towards the professional growth of nurses.

Conclusions: The strategies which have been adopted by the nursing profession in Saudi Arabia have proved to be effective.

Implications: The need for policy initiatives to improve the current status of Saudi Arabian nurses in the country for education, research and practice.
