Evidence-based practice is now essential for all nurse practitioner (NP) practice. A study conducted by the researcher (2002-2003) revealed that a sample of NPs defined evidence-based practice as research-based practice learned primarily through graduate study. Evidence for practice was learned primarily through on-line journals, clinical standards, and clinical protocols. This study was limited to a homogeneous sample from a single geographic area. Additional information is required to obtain information from a more divergent group of clinicians.

The purpose of this project is to survey NPs working in both the United States as well as selected international settings to address the research question: "What are NP's perceptions of evidence-based practice?"

Methodology:

This descriptive study employs non-random sampling methods to obtain data from NPs currently in clinical practice in the United States and selected international settings. Data collection will occur in 2004. Surveys will include an 8 item survey questionnaire regarding evidence-based practice as well as a brief demographic questionnaire. Data will be analyzed qualitatively using content analysis; descriptive statistics will be used to quantitatively analyze demographic data.

Results:

Data collection for this study will begin early in 2004. Preliminary data analysis of this study data will be available in July, 2004.

Summary/Practice Implications:

Current literature supports the use of evidence-based practice for NPs. Limited information regarding perceptions of this practice has been obtained by the study author; extension of this research to a wider sample may provide additional and important information regarding NP perceptions of evidence-based practice.
