Improving End-of-Life Care: International Implications for Palliative Nursing Care

Learning Objective #1: Identify projects that coordinate national nursing efforts related to end-of-life (EOL)/palliative care
Learning Objective #2: Describe teaching resources to enhance EOL competence in undergraduate education, graduate education, oncology care, and pediatric palliative care through the ELNEC programs
The purpose of this symposium is to describe a comprehensive national effort to improve end of life (EOL)/palliative care by nurses. The initial project, which began in February 2000, started with the partnership of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and the City of Hope (COH) Medical Center to coordinate national nursing efforts related to EOL care. This initial project, funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, developed a core training curriculum to develop EOL expertise in undergraduate nursing faculty, as well as continuing education programs. The curriculum focuses on nine core areas in EOL care including an overview of palliative care, pain management, symptom management, ethical issues, culture, communication, quality care, care at the time of death and grief. Many projects have developed as a result of the initial curriculum. Four of these projects will be presented in this symposium including: ELNEC-Undergraduate, ELNEC-Graduate targeted for graduate nursing faculty members; ELNEC-Pediatric Palliative Care, targeted for the pediatric practicing nurse; and ELNEC-Oncology, targeted for the practicing nurse in cancer care. The ELNEC curriculum includes detailed teaching materials to integrate scientific evidence for best practice into existing nursing curriculum and clinical teaching. This organized effort is a major step towards strengthening nursing education in EOL care to improve care of the dying. This symposium will discuss content, teaching methods and evaluation across palliative care education programs.
