An Explanation of Cancer Patients' Hope Just After Surgery Under the Idea of Chaos Theory
Dal Sook Kim, PhD, RN, Nursing Department, Chung-Nam National University, Daejeon City, South Korea
Learning Objective #1: Explain the hope of the persons at similar empirical situations would differ and change in structure
Learning Objective #2: Exlain the cancer patients' hope just after surgery with realitic nature is explained connecting the idea of Chaos theory

Purpose. The purpose of the study was to make an explanation of the Korean cancer patients' hope just after surgery under the idea of Chaos theory such as change, diversity, disequilibria, and etc., through testing the theoretical hope model from combining Stotland's hope theory(1969) and Mishel's expanded uncertainty theory (1990) that adds the idea of Chaos theory. The theoretical model with realistic nature postulates that uncertainty influences perceived therapeutic effect and that hope is indirectly influenced by uncertainty through perceived therapeutic effect. Method. In a cross-sectional survey design with convenient sampling method, the highly reliable modified Mishel uncertainty scale with 27 items measured uncertainty in illness. PTE was measured on the visual analogue scale. Hope was measured with the highly reliable Kim and Lee hope scale. Result. Each relational pattern between uncertainty and PTE and between uncertainty and hope was transformed at the same bifurcation point of uncertainty on the Scatterplot. Therefore, different explanations on the model were made with the newley made two groups of the low uncertainty group(71) and high uncertainty group(39). In the low uncertainty group, hope is explained in the structure composed of an indirect weak negative relational path from uncertainty to PTE and a direct strong positive relational path from PTE to hope, while in the high uncertainty group, hope is explained in the structure made of an indirect weak positive path from uncertainty to PTE and a direct weak positive relational path from PTE to hope. Concluson. The conclusion that the Korean cancer patients' hope just after surgery needs to be explained and understood under the idea of Chaos theory. In addition, hope is considerd as person-specific rather than situation specific.
