The purpose of this follow-up study was to examine the effectiveness of a strengths based intervention strategy as a positive appraisal resource in Alzheimer's caregiving. Previous path analysis identified hope as an adjunct to a model of positive appraisal resources. Hope as a strengths based intervention introduces the model. The relationship of hope to finding meaning in caregiving, sense of coherence and coping was examined previously as a model for caregiving intervention. The participants in the strengths based intervention model were 183 rural caregivers from 18 rural counties who participated in a grant funded study conducted by the investigator. A model with modified paths based on best fit provided the significant linkages suggesting hope as the precursor among study variables. Results indicated that a hope intervention early in the model application would strengthen a program of positive appraisal in Alzheimer's caregiving. A strengths based model of planned caregiving interventions includes enhancing hope as an early strategy to help maximize other strategies in the model. Interventions based on findings will assist in promoting strengths based approaches to caregiving situations of Alzheimer's persons.
