Video pictures present the ultimate method to obtain the evidence for behavioral analysis of people who, because of their age or handicaps, have difficulty with any form of verbal communication. The rapid improvement of video technologies, such as the small size of high-quality cameras and the affordability of DVDs, make possible an unprecedented opportunity for their use for evidence based nursing research and education. The purpose of this presentation is to share my experience in video research with the elderly who have dementia and preschool children who have limited ability for verbal communication. Video pictures of the elderly were taken by two researchers specialized in behavioral science, but my students took the pictures of the preschool children. In the elderly, I used the Roper Logan Tierney model for the analysis. The model used for the children were those of Gesell and Piaget. In all of these analyses, my students and I found the video pictures presented unparalleled means for behavioral analyses of the population whose ability for verbal communication is severely limited. In conclusion, digital camera and DVDs provided an excellent means for detailed analysis of video pictures.
