The purposes of this study are to assess knowledge of nursing professionals at emergency and medical-surgical hospitalization units on protection measures used when assisting the patient suspect of having pulmonary tuberculosis, to detect aspects which are indicative of lack of knowledge, which may compromise his/her safety and to give support to construct training proposals and development of these professionals. This is a descriptive-exploratory study carried out in a full-size university hospital in the city of São Paulo. The sample consisted of 280 professionals, of which 248 nursing assistants and 32 nurses. After ethic procedures, data were collected by means of a questionnaire, including socio-demographic data, knowledge and perceptions of these professionals. Of the 280(100%) nursing professionals, 32 (11.43%) were nurses and 248 (88.75%) nursing assistants. Most were single females and mentioned that the disease was caused due to (M.tuberculosis) bacillus; airborne affecting lungs; dry or productive cough manifestation, fever and lost of weight. They mentioned as praised measures at the work unit: isolation of the patient and use of “Equipment of Individual Protection” (EIP). In the school, they received orientation regarding protection measures. When the suspect arouse, they mentioned about the patient isolation as the first measure followed by EIP; communication would be first addressed to the Control of Nosocomial Infection Service (CNIS); followed by nurse and doctor. The use of EIP followed by isolation of the patients were measures already established. These measures were unknown by 35 (12.50%) of the nursing professionals. After the evaluation, the study allowed to identify needs of nursing professionals when facing a patient with suspect of having pulmonary tuberculosis, granting subsidies for the CNIS and Continuous Education of the Institution.
