Integrating Evidence-Based Protocols Into a Computerized Workflow
Marjorie A. Lavin, RN, MSN, CNRN, Clinical Informatics, Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown, PA, USA
Learning Objective #1: Identify key elements of developing computerized protocols
Learning Objective #2: Identify steps of integrating computerized protocols into daily workflow

The Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Protocols are guidelines developed by the Protocol Committee, primarily through an evidence-based approach, utilizing the American Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) recommendations for clinical practice guideline development. Development began in 1980's, with an attempt to organize care, coordinate care, and become more efficient. Our organization continues to strive to provide the best of care to their patients utilizing protocols. Informatics provides a new approach in assisting providers with understanding and implementing a selective protocol for their patient. Throughout the transition of paper to computerized protocols, the 10 steps in Clinical Management Protocol Development were revisited, prompting an up to date assessment of scientific evidence and literature reviews. The team was successful with the transition of paper to computerized protocols, and also identified steps of integrating computerized protocols into daily workflow. Transitioning protocols from paper to computerized ordersets was a new challenge, focusing on providing safe and efficient protocols and documentation. The presentation will also discuss the outcomes of individual protocols. A successful approach can be realized when collaboration takes place between key stakeholders of the change, such as Nursing, Pharmacy, Physicians and the Informatics team.
