Validation of the Chinese Version of Meaning in Caregiving for Taiwanese Caregivers of Mentally Ill Patients

This paper describes the validation of Chinese version of Meaning in Caregiving for Taiwanese caregivers of mentally ill patients. One hundred seventy one caregivers of schizophrenic patients in Taiwan were recruited in this study. Original English version instrument included 16 items, grouped into three subscales. Back direct translation was conducted. Cultural issues were also taken into consideration. Internal consistency Cronbach's alpha was utilized to examine reliability and .68-.74 of Cronbach's alpha for each subscale were found. The construct validity of the Chinese version of Meaning in Caregiving was assessed by factor analysis. Four factors were identified (the importance of being the major caregiver, reconsideration of life value, transcendent beliefs, and fatalism), accounting for 63.57 % of the total variance. This questionnaire may be particularly useful for monitoring caregivers' psychological adjustment for being a caregiver.
