Objective: To explore the lived experience of mothers with low birth weight premature infants during the early puerperium. Design: Qualitative research with field study. Setting: One of the medical centers in Northern Taiwan where 340 prematures were born every year. Methods: Subjects were seven mothers with 1500-2500 grams premature infants. They were purposive sampled by the researcher when they hospitalized. As the clinical nurse specialist, the researcher provided nursing care and the discharged following up for both mothers and their infants until one month postpartum. During this period, the researcher collected about twelve interview data from each subject by participant observation. The data were written as a narrative process recording. The data were analyzed based on Benner's interpretive research strategies of phenomenology. This study protocol was reviewed and approved by the University Review Board for Research. Informed consents were obtained from all subjects. Result: Research result can be summarized into the theme "choas". There were included four categories: 1. Disturbing of the original rearing plans. 2. Performing mothering with scared and exhausted. 3. Expecting of skipping forward in time. 4. Desiring of the baby "catch up" to normal term. Conclusion: The mothers with low birth weight premature infants need more preparation and helping in performing motherhood. The clinical nurse specialist should realize the lived experience difference between mothers with premature or full term infants. And then provide more specific nursing cares and education to mothers with low birth weight premature infants.
