The Relationship Between Pediatric Exposure to Environmental Tobacco Smoke and Adult-Onset Asthma
Sandra A. Ranck, MSN, Gannon University & Kent State University, Ashtabula, OH, USA
Learning Objective #1: Identify if a relationship exists between exposure to environmental tobacco smoke as a child and adult-onset asthma
Learning Objective #2: Identify areas for future research that would examine the relationship of environmental tobacco smoke and adult-onset asthma

This descriptive study was conducted to determine if a relationship exists between pediatric exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and adult-onset asthma. Previous studies have demonstrated a relationship between childhood asthma and exposure to ETS. A relationship has also been demonstrated between smoking and adult-onset asthma. One Scandinavian study demonstrated that a relationship existed between childhood exposure to ETS and adult-onset asthma. To explore the hypothesized relationship, a questionnaire was mailed to a randomized list of registered nurses who are members of their state professional organization, the Ohio Nurses Association. Respondents were questioned about their asthma history along with any exposure to ETS that might have occurred during various developmental stages in their life. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square. Data does not provide evidence for the existence of a relationship between pediatric exposure to ETS and adult-onset asthma.
