Dennis Sherrod, EdD, RN, Division of Nursing, Winston-Salem State University, Winston-Salem, NC, USA
Learning Objective #1: Identify marketing strategies for branding a nursing program and attracting prospective faculty
Learning Objective #2: Develop strategies for promoting faculty satisfaction and retention

To meet rising demand for nurse professionals, Winston-Salem State University, an historical black college and university is faced with doubling nursing student capacity. And while many factors influence program expansion, a major consideration is recruitment and retention of nursing faculty. In the past two years, our program has implemented a number of strategies designed to recruit and retain faculty. Marketing strategies have included market branding our nursing program with a focus on “student and faculty diversity” and “health care disparities.” An on-line application and applicant tracking process was implemented. Retention strategies implemented include an extensive orientation program and faculty mentoring. A process for systematically determining faculty satisfaction was also developed and implemented. Our goal is to develop and maintain a quality workplace for our nursing faculty. This presentation will provide results and evaluation findings of a number of nurse faculty recruitment and retention strategies. Implications for other nursing programs will also be presented.
