Design: This is a non-experimental descriptive pilot study designed to identify factors that contribute to the overall health status and satisfaction of patients who receive primary care services delivered by advanced practice nurses in an academic nursing center (UNACARE Health Center). Concept: An individual's self-reporting of their physical and mental health profiles as well as their overall satisfaction is a valuable tool for measuring health service outcomes. Previous studies support the efficacy of advanced practice nurses. However, there is limited investigation of the relationship between the services advanced practice nurses deliver and satisfaction and health status outcomes patients report. Research Questions: What are the differences between the health status of patients on the first visit and subsequent visits for patients who receive primary care services in an academic nursing center? What are the differences in patient satisfaction on the first visit and subsequent visits for patients who receive primary care services in an academic nursing center? Site/Population: UNACARE Health Center is an academic nursing center that serves an inner-city African American community in Jackson, Mississippi. This four mile square area has a total of 4,865 households with 25% of families' income falling below the poverty level. Health issues are characterized by high rates of hypertension, stroke, asthma, diabetes, and obesity. Methodology: This is a descriptive study of the outcome measurements utilized at UNACARE over a six month period of time. The Health Status Survey, SF-12, will be utilized to measure health status and an investigator designed tool will be utilized to measure satisfaction for all new adult patients. Descriptive statistics will be used to answer the research questions. Findings: Data collection will be completed in June. Findings will be presented at the conference. Implications: Outcome measurements utilized at this academic nursing center may be replicated at other centers.
