SYMPOSIUM

Methological Issues in Research With Immigrants
Learning Objective #1: Discuss selected methodological challenges when conducting research with immigrants, including recruitment and retention, developing culturally appropriate measures, and delivering culturally tailored interventions
Learning Objective #2: Analyze issues specific to selected immigrant groups, including Arab Muslims, Mexicans, and former Soviets and discuss similarities among these and other immigrant groups
This symposium addresses selected methodological challenges that arise when conducting research with immigrants and describes how these methodological issues were addressed by researchers with extensive experience with immigrant study populations. The selected methodological issues include recruitment and retention of immigrants in longitudinal studies, translation and ensuring conceptual equivalence of research documents for use in cultures other than the culture they were developed for, and tailoring clinical interventions for immigrants so that they are culturally appropriate while maintaining scientific integrity. These topics will be discussed within the context of three ongoing research studies: A study of mother-child adjustment in Arab immigrants and refugees; a study of the impact of family adaptation, health behavior, and stress management on the relationship between acculturation and health status in midlife women from the former Soviet Union; and an intervention study using home visits and a problem-solving approach to decrease depression in Mexican immigrant women and their fourth and fifth grade children. Similarities and differences in the selected methodological challenges by immigrant group and study population will be illustrated.
