Autistic Spectrum Disorders -- Seeking Evidence for Nursing Practice
Learning Objective #1: Describe existing barriers to accessing care for parents when a child is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
Learning Objective #2: Identify feasible nursing practice strategies to facilitate optimal wellness for children with ASD and their families
Worldwide, there is concern about the increasing prevalence of children with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD). The nursing care for affected children and their families has become a topic for epidemiologic and intervention research. This symposium will disseminate findings from recent nursing studies aimed at advancing nursing knowledge and practice in caring for this population. This symposium comprises studies that were conducted by nurse and other researchers associated with the Pennsylvania Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities Epidemiology (CADDRE). PA-CADDRE is one of 6 Centers of Excellence funded by the United State’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The objectives of PA-CADDRE are to conduct epidemiologic research related to ASDs and other developmental disabilities, improve community and service provider awareness of ASDs, and improve patient and parent access to comprehensive, community-based, family-centered care. Included in these presentations will be a discussion of how a large interdisciplinary research center provides researchers with a collaborative environment and resources to generate evidence-based nursing practice. The symposium will conclude an exchange of ideas and suggestions among presenters and participants.
