Operationalizing Health Policy to Build Nursing and Midwifery Research Capacity in Ireland
Learning Objective #1: Outline the main factors that influence nursing and midwifery research policy in Ireland
Learning Objective #2: Articulate the "fit" between policy and how it is practiced at organisational and individual levels
This symposium offers a 'case study' of how policy is operationalised in practice. The focus of the symposium is on a government-funded national scheme which aims to build research capacity in Irish nursing and midwifery, entitled the Clinical Nursing and Midwifery Fellowship scheme. The scheme enables experienced nurses and midwives to undertake a clinical nursing or midwifery research study leading to a postgraduate degree at masters or doctoral level. In paper one a description of the scheme and the findings of an evaluation of applications are set against the context of national health and research policy. The second paper brings the scheme down to the level of the individual and uses insights from tranistion theory to explore the adaptation to the role of Clinical Nursing and Midwifery Fellow. Paper three explores futures at both individual and policy level. A recent 'graduate' from the scheme will explore how opportunities are utilized for a future career path and some tentative suggestions will be outlined for the future of the scheme itself.
