Professional Nursing Values Across the Career Trajectory
Learning Objective #1: State three factors that influence the development of professional values
Learning Objective #2: Describe the evolution of professional values across nurses’ career trajectory
Behavior is guided by personally held principles, beliefs, and values. Professional values, the recognized standards for action that are embraced by members of the profession, are used to guide both education and practice. Development of professional values begins upon entry into the nursing education environment, continues throughout the educational experience and the professional career. Upon graduation, nurses enter a chaotic work environment. Frequently, nurses’ values are challenged, either strengthening or weakening the foundational beliefs. Professional values serve to guide the delivery of nursing care and decision-making. The relationship between professional values, professional education, work environment, experience, and the nurses’ personal commitment to the profession influence the perception of the significance of values in a professional’s life. The influence of personal and professional characteristics is compared across the professional nurses’ career. Data collected over a five-year period from entry-level nursing students, graduating students and seasoned professional nurses has produced insight into the nurses’ perceptions of professional values. This symposium will compare and contrast the professional values of entry-level nursing students, senior students, and practicing registered nurses. Findings from several studies validate the importance of the initial socialization process and ongoing development of professional nursing values to practice. Awareness of differences in socialization and development of strong professional values is critical to the ongoing management of patient care in the modern healthcare system.
