Following the NIH Roadmap: Building Collaborative Research Teams
Learning Objective #1: Describe two methods of recruiting culturally diverse subjects into clinical research programs
Learning Objective #2: Ddescribe two key components of collaborative research endeavors
The focus of this symposium is on building collaborative research teams to address the priorities laid out on the NIH Roadmap. This symposium will highlight four points along the way toward the development of innovative, multidisciplinary research in the state of Hawaii. Substantive changes began at the NIH in 2003 to change the way biomedical science research is conducted in this country. The results of meetings and work groups have been published as the NIH Roadmap, a vision to guide the nation’s path toward greater scientific understanding of biology, the development of interdisciplinary research teams, and a reshaping of clinical research to improve peoples’ health. Nursing has a significant role to play in this process, along with all the other disciplines represented at the NIH. The University of Hawaii has received funding for an MS and PhD concentration in clinical research to facilitate this process. This competency-based program includes courses in biostatistics, outcomes research, research ethics, cultural competence, decision analysis and cost-effectiveness analysis. The papers presented in this symposium represent the type of research conducted by faculty and students and are developed around four major points along the NIH Roadmap: training researchers, understanding collaboration in multidisciplinary teams, conducting research in a multicultural environment, and developing research teams that address neglected problems in the state of Hawaii.
