Building International Nursing Research Collaborations: Issues, Challenges, and Hallmarks of Success
Learning Objective #1: Articulate the issues, challenges, and solutions to establishing successful international research collaborations
Learning Objective #2: Explore the creation of international collaborative research relationships among attendees
Using evidence to improve the health of all people in the world is a goal of Sigma Theta Tau International and nurses globally. Many threats to health transcend national boundaries, requiring generation of evidence-based solutions that also transcend boundaries. Nursing is regarded internationally as a science and research based discipline and profession. Emerging opportunities need to be embraced to enhance the growth of nursing research and its utilisation in practice to improve health care for all. International research collaborations have the potential to enhance the global relevance of nursing science and research-based practice through multi-site, cross-national research collaborations. A number of issues and challenges need to be considered in developing international research collaborations. This paper includes an analysis of the key issues and challenges, which need to be addressed, and managed in laying the foundations for successful international nursing research collaborations. Key issues include communication, team-building, human subjects protection, funding and other resources, implementation, dissemination, and planning for future projects. RESULTS Hallmarks of successful collaborations are described and discussed using a number of case studies where the issues and challenges have been successfully addressed by a number of international nursing research collaborative teams. The guidelines of international collaborative research of STTI are reviewed. CONCLUSION Identification of threats to health promotion globally and other nurse scientists focused on the same problems are key to successful international research collaborations. 1.
