The UMSON is a nationally recognized top 10 school that develops nursing leaders for education, research, and practice.  The UMSON Pi Chapter (015) of the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society is one of the oldest and largest chapters in the world with over 1200 active members.   The purpose of the Pi Chapter is to honor those who have achieved high academic success and to support scholarship, collaboration, evaluation, and research at all levels.

In 2009, the Board established a robust research and scholarship committee with oversight of an array of award, presentation, and mentoring opportunities.  Currently the Pi Chapter funds the following:  1) a Research Grant for full or part time faculty, 2) Doctoral Student Research Grants, 3) PhD Dissertation Awards, 4) DNP Capstone Awards, 5) Scholarly Presentation Awards, 6) BSN Senior Practicum Poster awards, and 7) Masters Student Scholarship awards.  The Board developed all grant applications and a process for mentoring and submission for researchers interested in pursuing these opportunities.  To date, the Pi Chapter has awarded over $45,000 and has supported an array of diverse activities.  In addition, the Pi Chapter has made a concerted effort to develop and support a portfolio of annual speakers who present on topics of interest to the community.  This series is open to the school community.  Each event is followed by networking which serves to promote collaboration, evidence based practice, and mentorship opportunities.
