Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to identify two effective strategies to recruit new STTI chapter members.
Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to identify two effective strategies to retain current STTI chapter members.
The mission of STTI is to support the learning, knowledge and professional development of nurses committed to making a difference in health worldwide. According to the findings from the Membership Involvement and Retention Task Force (2009), there are over 20,000 members a year inducted into STTI but only a fraction of these first time members renew after the first year. The Epsilon Pi Chapter of STTI celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2012. It currently has the highest member retention rate in Region 7, with more than 80% of members renewing annually. Member engagement reflects a shared commitment to nursing excellence and leadership that begins at the student level prior to actual induction into STTI. Students, and their transition to leadership in nursing and chapter activities, are a priority to Epsilon Pi. Best practices include a strong collaborative relationship with the nursing student leadership organization (VANS), promotion of networking opportunities between student members and community members, an updated chapter website that can be accessed from our College of Nursing webpage, and active recruitment of new graduate members for participation in chapter activities. Our purpose is to describe “case study” examples of successful strategies used by Epsilon Pi chapter to recruit and retain members.
