Learning Objective 1: The learner will identify ways to use high fidelity simulation to prepare clinical nursing faculty for student incivility at the patient bedside.
Learning Objective 2: The learner will describe the ways to use a standardized nursing student simulation to enhance communication and goal setting between educators and students.
Using simulation to provide an experience of student incivility allows the nurse educator to practice responses to these difficult situations in a safe environment. This two part project was developed using a high fidelity mannequin patient and a “standardized” nursing student to simulate difficult student situations at the bedside and the counseling of the nursing student. The project was developed using a simulation framework, learning objectives, and the theoretical frameworks of Benner’s Novice to Expert and Kolb’s Experiential learning theory. Real life clinical faculty experiences were used as a guide for developing the simulation scenarios.
In the first part of the project, the clinical nurse educator had to intervene in an unsafe student –patient interaction when the student is unprepared for the clinical experience and medication administration. The goal of the simulation experience was for the clinical educator to remove the scripted nursing student from the patient bedside. Part two of the project demonstrated the use of a “standardized” nursing student to simulate a counseling session between the clinical nurse educator and the nursing student. The goal of this simulation experience was for the nurse educator to help the student set goals and create an action plan for return to safe clinical practice. Debriefing questions were written for a debriefing session which was facilitated by an experienced clinical nurse educator. Simulation is a valuable tool for allowing nurse educators to role play patient issues and problems with their students in a safe practice environment without risk to patients or students.
