Nursing Leadership: Transforming Practice

Leadership is the ability to provide vision and mentorship to followers.  Nurses work synergistically with others, treat people with care and compassion, and empower others with vision.  Shared vision provides the energy required to move toward the future.  The Future of Nursing in New York State (NYS) has a long term vision and multiple strategies to implement the Institute of Medicine Report (2010) on The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.

It is well documented that our nation will continue to face ongoing healthcare challenges with the impact of an aging society and healthcare workforce, greater demand for healthcare services in response to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (2010), and increasing healthcare faculty shortages.  “New York has more good healthcare jobs than qualified workers to fill them… Nationally and statewide, healthcare is projected to grow more than five times faster than any other industry” (Catskill Hudson Area Health Education Center [CHAHEC] Annual Report, 2010-2011).  As nursing progresses in the 21stcentury, it is imperative to foster the growth of the profession to ensure quality services and cost effective patient outcomes.  Nurses must be positioned to advance healthcare reform and provide New Yorkers with access to quality healthcare.

The purpose of this poster presentation is to alert all nursing constituents to strategies of the Northern Metropolitan region (Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester Counties) of New York State as the region concentrates its efforts toward preparing and enabling nurses to lead change to advance health and transform practice (IOM Report Recommendation #7, 2010).
