Town and Gown Collaboration for Evidence-Based Practice

Learning Objective #1: Create a practice environment that fosters evidence-based practice through use of research nursing students
Learning Objective #2: Evaluate formats for synthesizing and evaluating evidence
An institutional goal to create and maintain a culture in nursing services that includes inquiry, broad-based sharing and data driven practice through evidence-based methodology stimulated a search for methods to accomplish this goal. Consultation with experts who have created such models and a dedicated administrative staff was step one in setting up an evidence-based practice (EBP) model. Attendance at the Translating Evidence into Practice Conference sponsored by AHCPR in 1998 helped lay the foundation for a collaborative network application of the model. The model became the basis for all practice review and the focus of the development of new knowledge acquisition. It soon became apparent however, in order to make EBP work, resources were needed. The nurse at the bedside with the practice question did not have time or knowledge to obtain and synthesize evidence. Multiple opportunities for integration of research findings into practice became apparent. Nursing student affiliations from area colleges and universities already existed in the clinical setting. Academic faculty were approached to consider clinical experiences in research, which included utilization of existing evidence in practice applications. The hospital practice specialist introduced projects to students in research class and students were "matched" to their areas of interest. Both university and institutional faculty mentored the students in the EBP model. Nurses at the bedside are able to investigate questions that stem form practice by requesting student assistance. The program has been extremely successful and has promoted an environment, which supports the clinician in providing positive patient outcomes through best practice.
