Magnetizing Evidence-Based Practice in Acute Care

Learning Objective #1: Discuss strategies for enhancing the infrastructure necessary to support evidence-based practice
Learning Objective #2: Describe the culture that facilitates clinical scholarship, a necessary component of the magnet characteristics
The quest to achieve the coveted American Nurses Association Magnet Hospital recognition has been accelerated by the nursing shortage. When a facility considers its journey towards Magnet recognition, a major concern is often whether or not a facility can meet the research criteria. While the ongoing conduct or facilitation of research conduct is a critical element within a Magnet facility, the “research” emphasis of the Magnet criteria is primarily on use of the research process and the application of research findings by nurses providing direct patient care. Professional nursing holds each nurse accountable for incorporating research-based knowledge into critical thinking about patient care (Crane, 1995). Evidence-based clinical practice and critical thinking must be apparent within the infrastructure and the culture of a facility seeking Magnet status. The nursing leadership or management of an institution is really the crux for assuring that the infrastructure and the culture that support evidence-based practice are embedded in the daily practice of the nursing department. The administrator’s job is to create an environment that encourages every nurse to become a clinical scholar, with ownership of their practice and accountable for patient outcomes. The discussion group will focus on identifying infrastructure and cultural characteristics within an acute care setting that will facilitate meeting the Magnet standards that have a research component. Secondly, the discussion will focus on implementing strategies that will facilitate meeting the Magnet standards.
