Let's Get Moving and Prevent Type II Diabetes in Children
Kim Marie Siarkowski, PhD, RN, Department of Nursing, Department of Nursing, DePaul University, Chicago, IL, USA
Learning Objective #1: To review the epidemiologic data regarding the new epidemic of type II diabetes in children. |
Learning Objective #2: To describe and evaluate innovative interventions which have decreased the risk of type II diabetes in children. |
Type II diabetes in children, previously very rare, is now reaching epidemic proportions. The last decade cases have doubled and there are many cases that are most likely not reported. The ongoing increase in prevalance is related to a more sedentary lifestyle in children, lack of gym classes in some public schools, poor parental supervision of activities, too much screen time (t.v., video games and computer), and a trend toward obesity in the U.S. Dietary habits also are a factor since high fat foods are the least expensive and the most convenient for busy families. Several innovative interventions have been established to increase activity in the most at risk groups, Latino and African Americans. The girls on the run organization is one example of such a program. When done in a group, exercise is more tolerable to teens and the peers serve as a motivator. Also, bibliotherapy is being used by the researcher to assess whether health self concept and health knowledge increases with the use of books aimed at healthy eating and exercise. Using Nola Pender's Health Promotion Model the reasearchers are exploring health self concept, self perception, and knowledge over time of healthy eating and exercise.
