The aim of the study was to explore the correlation of the early feeding experience with the consistency of breast feeding and maternal-infant attachment in Taiwan. Both qualitative and quantitative research designs were used to collect the results. The former, which focused on the experience of early feeding in the delivery room, was audio tape-recorded,verbatim transcribed, and content analysis was used to analyzed the data. The latter focused on quasi-experimental design, which enrolled 60 primigravida women with normal vaginal delivery and their husbands and main caregivers from four Baby-Friendly Hospitals. The 60 women were divided into two groups. One group consisted of early breast feeding, for 20 to 30 minutes, within one hour after normal vaginal delivery; the other was a controlled group without the above mentioned manipulation. Four questionnaires were utilized to collect quantitative data. Because the collected data was not evenly distributed, non-parametric statistics methods were used to analyze the data. The findings of this study were: 1. early feeding enhanced the consistency and continuity of breast-feeding 6 weeks postpartum ; 2. Correlation of early feeding and maternal-infant attachment showed improvement for infant social and emotional stability; 3. The experience of early feeding offered a first close touch relationship, active interaction, positive learning experience, a close-knit feeling, and satisfaction for both mother and child. Based on the results of the study, one may suggest that early feeding might be an important element in clinical practice .This can be viewed as preliminary data to assist early feeding in the delivery room. The quality of family-centered maternity care and early breast-feeding could and should be improved,to provide a close , personal maternal-child bond.

Key words; early feeding , consistency of breast-feeding, maternal-infant attachment.
