Action research presents the research community with many challenges (Gustavsen 2003). However, it is both evidence based (Earl-Slater 2002) and enables evidence-based nursing (Bellman 2003). The evolving critical action research (CAR)approach for nursing is underpined by the philosophy of Habermas and change theory, and demonstrates an 'open philosophy' of science, which links science, philosophy and practice (Reed 1995).

Symbiosis

The paper presented will demonstrate how the Honor Society of Nursing's definition of evidence-based nursing is implemented on a micro and/or macro scale through facilitation of the CAR process and outcomes. Key attributes of the process encompass: clarifying nursing values and preferences with patients/users, service managers, and the multidisciplinary team; collaborative identification of best evidence; nurse-led identification of the drivers and barriers to evidence-based nursing change and development, practice-focused implementation and evaluation. Evaluation is an integral part of CAR enabling ongoing review of both the implementation of best practice and the effectiveness of the CAR approach.

Conceptual framework

A conceptual framework for the implementation of evidence-based nursing has evolved from researching CAR and nurse-led change and development in clinical practice. The presentation will describe and critique the five key concepts of the framework. Feedback from the delegates will be welcomed on the significance of this evidence-based framework and the CAR approach for the implementation of evidence-based nursing.
