Educational Transformation to Support the Creation of Evidence-Based Nursing Environments
Learning Objective #1: Examine the transition from a traditional research model to an evidence-based practice approach to fulfill research requirements and workplace expectations of the master's prepared nurse
Learning Objective #2: Describe the application of evidence-based practice models to transform clinical practices and administrative decision-making
This focused discussion will identify the critical elements necessary to bridge the gap between traditional educational expectations of master’s level research competencies and clinical practice expectations. An alternative approach to master’s research was implemented to bridge the gap between evidence and practice and to facilitate and support the creation of evidence-based nursing practice environments. Teams of students from different specialty areas collaborated in the development of practice protocols/algorithms. The richness of different perspectives on clinical problems and systems’ barriers and facilitators were considered by students, resulting in collaborative problem-solving and a heightened awareness of the need to maximize quality outcomes in a cost effective manner. The projects fostered teamwork and inculcated evidence-based practice values into the students’ role perceptions. New skill sets that included accessing a wide variety of cross-disciplinary evidence, tools for grading evidence, mastery of research critiques, and the usefulness of frameworks for promoting systematic inquiry and problem-solving were learned. An appreciation of the critical nature of change theory was also achieved in relation to clinical practice and administrative decision-making. Knowledge and skill sets were reinforced through the design of evidence-based practice protocols that either addressed common clinical concerns or specifically addressed an area of research interest from a partnering clinical agency. Graduates of the program in a variety of advanced nursing roles will share examples of successful evidence-based practice changes, building on the knowledge and skills gained through the curricular transformation.
