Knowledge Sharing Networks: Strategies For Improving Practice
Learning Objective #1: Describe how knowledge sharing networks can be used to facilitate clinical practice guideline adoption and implementation
Learning Objective #2: Describe how a formalized role of best practice champion can promote and influence knowledge translation and transfer
Uptake of clinical practice guidelines continues to be a challenge in health care organizations. As one strategy to facilitate implementation of nursing best practice guidelines, a region-wide knowledge sharing network was established in one province in Canada, and referred to as the Best Practice Champions Netowkr. The Network was developed utilizing the theoretical underpinnings of Roger's (1995) diffusion of innovation theory and Provan & Milward's (2001) work on networks. The cornerstone of the network was the creation of a formalized role of Best Practice Chmapion informed by a literature review and extensive work done in implementing clinical practice guidelines. Created in 2002, the Network has met with tremendous success having engaged over three hundred nurses from a wide range of roles and health care sectors. In this presentation, we will discuss the literature and the experience that informed this initiative. Additionally, the operational activities, whcih provide meaning to the Network and the role of the champion, will be discussed in detail. Evaluation results from this two-year initiative will be shared along with plans for improvement.
