Creating Work Cultures that Support Evidence-Based Practice

Learning Objective #1: Delineate the nine fundamental elements that must be present in the clinical setting to sustain evidence-based practice
Learning Objective #2: Articulate the key strategies that must be implemented to assure evidence-based clinical outcomes are achieved
This focused discussion will evolve around 9 fundamental elements identified by thousands of clinicians in over 100 rural, community and university settings in the US and Canada as essential to support evidence-based practice cultures. The nature of the work necessary to assure the presence of each of the following elements will be shared: a process to clarify shared purpose around things that matter most, the ability to have meaningful conversations or dialogue skills, the nature of healthy relationships or partnerships with patients/families and all other care givers, clarity on the scope of professional nursing practice, competency within the scope, integrated competency with all other disciplines, a documentation system that honors both those who give and receive care, Clinical tools and resources that bring evidence-based knowledge to the bedside and system infrastructures that support partnerships with all disciplines and diverse settings across the care continuum. The strategies necessary to assure the presence of each element will be explored. Each element will be correlated to the desired outcome of evidence-based practice.
