An Evaluation Study for Health Care Database Usage of Nurses in a Medical Center in Taiwan

Learning Objective #2: Understand the nurses' ability of searching of EBN

There is a big challenge for nurses to face that how to capture the updated knowledge. The research is done at a tertiary medical-center in middle part of Taiwan on October, 2002. The structured questionnaire have three categories, including the demographic data, knowledge about the database, the confidence of practices, the usage of the database and the condition of database use. The expert validity was taken into count. The internal reliability Cronbach's value were 0.77, 0.81 and 0.71. The subjects were 1300 nurses totally, returned rate was 80 %. Data were analyzed by SPSS/PC for window10.0 with descriptive data and multiple variance liner model. The result showed that (1). No matter what knowledge about the database, the confidence of practices, or the usage of the database, the highest scores were always " Index to Chinese Periodical Literature and " Dissertation and Thesis Abstract system, (2). On the usage of the database, the lowest score were the Cochrane Library, CINHAL and Pub-Med. (3). The basic database training programs did not affect the scores of knowing the database, the confidence of practices, or the usage of the database, but the advanced database programs did. (4). The degree of the head nurse and the ability level of the nurses affected the usage of the database. It will be concerned the English reading ability of the nurses during the promotion Evidenced based Nursing. This study can be a reference when the EBN educational programs about searching the database were promoted.
