Clinical Practice Guideline for Overweight Children

Childhood overweight has become one of the fastest growing national health epidemics in the United States. The problem is often underrecognized and not diagnosed until well into adolescence. Interventions directed toward treatment of these children, in general, have not proven to be very successful and are haphazard. The children could develop complications secondary to obesity at a younger age. This presentation will provide an evidence based algorithm created by a multidisciplinary team at a Midwestern Pediatric Medical Center for use by primary care providers in the community. The algorithm will give direction related to early diagnosis of children considered high risk to developing overweight and its associated complications. It will provide evidence based practice guidelines, treatment options, as well as provide criteria for specialist referral. Additionally, clinical practice challenges will be discussed.
