Learning Objective #1: Discuss pros and cons of evidence-based e-learning
Learning Objective #2: Apply evidence-based guidelines to e-learning for nursing

Electronic learning (e-learning) — the delivery of a learning, training or educational programs by electronic means — is perceived to incorporate tremendous potential for nursing education. The e-learning literature suggests numerous possible benefits for practice and educational institutions. However, the literature does not provide a systematic review of studies that prove or disprove these contentions. Many nursing institutions have adopted an e-learning approach without a clear understanding of the benefits of this method over traditional means of education. This paper discusses the use of an evidence-based practice (EBP) approach to evaluate e-learning. Three nursing databases were searched from January 1998 until November 2004 using the term e-learning with the modifiers “peer reviewed” and “full text.” This systematic search identified any randomized controlled trials conducted in key topic areas and organized the rest by rigor. Results of the systematic review of each topic were summarized as completed and the obtained data were tabulated and analyzed. Conclusions focused on the veracity of the benefits claimed to accrue from utilizing an e-learning approach to the delivery of educational materials. These research derived (EBP-based) guidelines for implementing e-learning will be discussed.
