Promoting Evidence-Based Nursing Through Innovative Health Information Technology
Learning Objective #1: Describe the role of the electronic health record (EHR) in creating innovative ways to promote evidence-based nursing practice
Learning Objective #2: Articulate components of an evidence-based professional practice framework in an EHR that supports nurses, interdisciplinary collaboration, and patients
Nurse leaders today are leading at a very unique time in health care. There is an international focus on evidence-based practice and health information technology. Effective nurse leaders know they need to be leading and guiding both efforts within their clinical and academic settings at a time when resources are limited and technology is changing at a rapid pace. This session will review the current international trends for the development and implementation of evidence-based nursing (EBN) and for the adoption of health information standards via the electronic health records (EHRs). Most recently the United State’s President has called for widespread adoption of interoperable electronic health records (EHRs) within the next 10 years. The new Federal Framework for Strategic Action outlines 4 major goals that will require interoperability on the technical and practice sides of healthcare. This session will describe in detail the core components of a Professional Practice Framework that informs clinical practice with the use of EHRs, interconnects clinicians so they can exchange patient health information, personalizes patient care, and improves data collection for quality measurement and research. One of the core components is intentionally designed evidence-based Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) that are developed, consensually validated and implemented to promote evidence-based nursing through a very innovative template methodology in the EHR. This interoperable evidence-based practice framework has been implemented in rural, community and university settings who are striving towards the vision for bridging the gap between the best evidence available and the most appropriate nursing care of patients with varied needs.
