The Clinical Scholar Model: One Approach for Promoting Interdisciplinary Evidence-Based Practice in Acute Care
Learning Objective #1: Describe one approach for addressing the challenges of changing a traditional culture to an innovative, evidence-based practice culture
Learning Objective #2: Explore the positive and negative experiences of staff nurse mentors as the promoters of evidence-based practice in a tertiary care, teaching environment
The Clinical Scholar model for developing and supporting staff nurse mentors as promoters of evidence-based practice is predicated on the notion that if research is to translated and used in practice, it must be understood and embraced by the nurse at the bedside. Within the model are steps for conceptualizing a patient or staff issue prompted by a clinical problem, new knowledge, risk or benchmarking data, or the inquisitive mind of the clinical scholar. Each issue is examined for internal and external evidence to support changing practice. The feasibility of success in making the practice change is assessed using a format suggested by the Conduct and Utilization of Research in Nursing project (CURN). With a few modifications, this assessment guide assists evidence-based practice teams in determining the “probability of adoption” for their project. Yet, even with knowledge and enthusiasm as their armamentarium for creating an innovative culture shift to patient-focused, evidence-based care, challenges are confronted from within the nursing discipline and from other disciplines and individuals throughout the acute care setting. The purpose of this focused discussion group is to explore and discuss the Clinical Scholar model as one inductive approach for promoting staff nurse leadership in the quest for evidence-based practice and to describe the process for building this capacity of staff nurse mentors. A cadre of staff nurses, active and seasoned in mentoring other staff nurses and in the creative use of multiple approaches and resources for addressing the challenges of cultural change, will serve as the discussants.
