Evaluating a Published Guideline or Systematic Review for Application in Practice
Kathleen M. Keane, RN, BSN, Maine Medical Center, Portland, ME, USA

The increasing availability of evidence-based guidelines and synthesized reviews is a godsend for the busy nurse. However, systematically examining the validity and feasibility of the guidelines and recommendations from the reviews is paramount to evidence-based practice. Nurses in the intensive care unit questioned the evidence base for a continuously changing order set for managing postoperative nausea and vomiting. Several published checklists for evaluating guidelines and reviews were critiqued. In this presentation, a hybrid checklist will be used to examine the strength of the evidence reported in a systematic review on postoperative nausea and vomiting. The process used to apply the recommendations and incorporate expert consensus in a local setting will be explained.
