Clinical Nursing Scholars: Building a Community of EBP Mentors

Learning Objective #1: Describe an inductive model for initiating and sustaining an evidence-based practice culture in acute care
Learning Objective #2: Discuss strategies for promoting staff nurse clinical scholars as Evidence-Based Nursing mentors
Several models for promoting evidence-based practice cultures in acute care setting have been explored. The model used in our facility is inductive and predicated on "building a community" of Clinical Scholars to serve as mentors in the critique, integration, implementation, and evaluation of internal (quality improvement and benchmarking data) and external (empirical studies) evidence and in the application and evaluation of the evidence in practice. The Clinical Scholar model supports the notion that for research to be used in practice, it must be understood and valued by the direct care providers. Clinical Scholars are those nurses that demonstrate a consistent spirit of inquiry and quest for learning. They model reflective practice and have the ability to seek out and use available resources to improve clinical care. Through a series of evidence-based practice workshops, approximately 50 direct care providers in our 600+ tertiary care facility have learned to identify clinical issues in need of change, critique the evidence, prepare integrated tables, evaluate integrated and systematic reviews and published guidelines, and develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based protocols and procedures. Four clinical scenarios will provide the context for the symposium. Examples of strategies within the Clinical Scholar model for developing staff nurses as Clinical Scholars and for initiating and sustaining an EBP culture will be presented. The presenters will be direct care providers who can answer questions regarding their work, along with the challenges and opportunities they have experienced.
