Linda O'Dell, RN, MSN, Mental Health, Central Arkansas Veteran's Healthcare System, North Little Rock, AR, USA
Learning Objective #1: identify and describe the roles of the nurse from Peplau's Theory of Interpersonal Relations
Learning Objective #2: compare and contrast benefits of using a specific role

This presentation reviews the theory of interpersonal relationships as developed by Peplau. The roles of stranger, resource person, teacher, leader, surrogate, and counselor are described.  The various roles are described within the context of the health care team.  In this era of increasing the  presence  of the interdisciplinary health care team no matter what the area of practice, Peplau's theory can be effectively utilized by the nurse as a member of the team to facilitate the work of the team as an entity for the ultimate goal of assisting the individual client and family.
