Pink Power Program on Breast Cancer Awareness and Screening
Carol A. Clay, RN, FNP, BSN, MSN, Occupational Health and Wellness, Community Memorial Healthcenter, South Hill, VA, USA
Learning Objective #1: describe how to increase breast cancer awareness and screening on a community level.
Learning Objective #2: explain how a small hospital in Southside Virginia has brought a unique breast health program to those most in need, the uninsured.

Community Memorial Healthcenter (CMH) in South Hill, Virginia with the help of grant funds from the Greater Richmond Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has successfully brought a unique breast health education and screening program to the people of the faith community in the Southside area through our Community Church Health Partnership (CCHP) which is comprised of over 2000 members that are 57% female and predominantly African American.  CMH is committed to serving the health care needs of our community, and it is one of our visions to act as the region’s health care resource. There is clearly a lack of breast cancer screening in our community as evidenced by the mortality rate in the Southside area of 34.1 per 100,000 persons, which is greater than the state of Virginia’s rate of 28.8 per 100,000 persons. It is our hope to decrease the mortality rates for breast cancer and reduce the healthcare disparities in our community. Our objective is to serve 200 women between the ages of 40-64 who reside in Mecklenburg, Brunswick, and Lunenburg counties who are uninsured or underinsured with free Clinical Breast Exams, Self Breast Exam Education, Screening Mammography with both computer (CAD) and radiologist interpretations, as well as, transportation to and from all appointments. Our goals are to increase access to breast health information, clinical breast exams and mammograms and improve knowledge on breast health. Our program has been effective, in part, because of our CCHP. Through our partnership with our local churches we have been able to identify grant recipients, disseminate breast health education and promote awareness of breast cancer.
